Coachella Valley, California — A medical helicopter landed at the 45-yard line to airlift an injured player during the Xavier Prep versus Coachella Valley football game on Friday evening. This dramatic incident occurred during the first half of the season opener at Coachella Valley High School.
The helicopter, arriving from Imperial, was summoned following a head injury sustained by Xavier Prep quarterback King Pellum. Pellum was struck in the first quarter and initially retreated to the sideline.
However, he later experienced dizziness and briefly lost consciousness on the bench. Although he was moving his limbs upon the helicopter’s arrival, medical officials opted for airlifting him to Riverside Health Center in Moreno Valley as a precautionary measure.
With 37 seconds remaining in the half, the game was halted to accommodate the helicopter’s landing. Despite the serious nature of the incident, Pellum’s condition stabilized, and he was later reported to be in good spirits.
The game saw another severe injury in the fourth quarter when Xavier Prep freshman running back Anderson Acosta was immobilized on the field after a collision. Acosta was transported to JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio, where a CT scan showed no brain bleeding or swelling. He was released early Saturday morning.
Xavier Prep school president Mark Campbell confirmed that both players are recovering well at home. The game was eventually called off after a 20-minute delay, with Coachella Valley leading 27-0. Coaches and players from both teams expressed their concerns and support for the injured athletes, underscoring the emotional toll of the night’s events.
During this challenging time, we extend our heartfelt thoughts to the players and their families. Our community is keeping King Pellum and Anderson Acosta in our thoughts and wishes them a swift and full recovery.
