Alarming Rates of Traumatic Brain Injuries in Alaska Demand Urgent Action

A recent study conducted by the Alaska Health Department has revealed a shocking truth: Alaska holds the dubious distinction of having the highest death rate from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in the entire nation. The report, which analyzed data from 2016 to 2021, examined emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and fatalities caused by TBIs, where one in four deaths among Alaskans under the age of 30 was linked to a TBI.

The leading causes of TBI-related deaths in Alaska were suicides and accidental falls. For individuals over the age of 85, an alarming 72% of TBI-related deaths resulted from unintentional falls. In contrast, among younger adults, suicides accounted for the largest proportion of fatalities.

The report also shed light on the disproportionate impact of TBIs on Alaska Native and American Indian communities. These groups experienced serious or fatal traumatic brain injuries at a rate three times higher than the national average.

The study highlighted the significant role of vehicle crashes in inflicting severe injuries or claiming lives among young adults. In Northern Alaska, ATV and snow machine accidents were identified as common culprits for causing serious head injuries.

Disturbingly, over 40% of deaths from traumatic brain injuries in Alaska were the result of suicides involving firearms. Suicide rates in the state are notably higher among young men aged 25 to 34, as well as Native Alaskans and American Indians.

The study also uncovered challenges faced by individuals seeking care following a traumatic brain injury in Alaska. Many people encountered barriers such as high costs or geographical limitations that hindered their access to necessary medical attention.
