Concussion Is a Traumatic Brain Injury – Many Unaware

Fairfax, VA – A new national survey conducted by the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) has revealed a concerning truth: 81% of U.S. adults don’t know that a concussion is a traumatic brain injury (TBI). This widespread misinformation highlights an urgent need for public and medical education on the actual impact of brain injuries.

Key Findings from the Study

The survey, conducted with over 2,100 U.S. adults, uncovered a critical gap between public perception and medical reality when it comes to concussions:

  • 81% do not recognize that concussions are TBIs
  • 82% are unaware that falls are the leading cause of brain injuries
  • Only 23% have ever been screened for brain injury during a medical visit
  • 49% incorrectly identify unrelated symptoms as concussion indicators (e.g., hallucinations, facial paralysis)
  • Only 28% view TBI as an “invisible disability”
  • Gender disparity: Men are nearly twice as likely as women to be asked about TBI history (29% vs. 16%)
  • Barriers to care: 41% would not seek treatment after a head injury, believing it’s not serious; 35% cite cost as a reason

Traumatic Brain Injuries: An Invisible Yet Chronic Condition

Many still believe a concussion is “just a bump on the head,” but medical science confirms it’s a real brain injury with long-term effects and symptoms, including:

  • Cognitive and memory problems
  • Mood disorders
  • Increased risk of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cardiovascular disease
  • Diminished quality of life

Brain injury is a chronic health condition that is underdiagnosed, underfunded, and has a massive impact on public health,” said John D. Corrigan, Ph.D., National Research Director at BIAA.
