During Brain Injury Awareness Month, the provincial government reaffirmed its commitment to those facing traumatic brain injuries. For example, with a $5.7 million investment, the Alberta Brain Injury Initiative (ABII) will be expanded, bringing together 12 organizations to provide comprehensive care to the more than 5,000 people suffering from traumatic or non—traumatic brain injuries each year.
Holistic Support to Rebuild Lives
The program offers key services, including:
- Relearning daily living skills
- Coping strategies and emotional support
- Connection to social, medical, and legal resources
- Personalized community assistance to foster independence
Pam McGladdery, Director of URSA (Universal Rehabilitation Service Agency), emphasized the critical impact of these services on recovery:
“We help rebuild confidence, functionality, and a sense of belonging.”
An Inspiring Story: Mimi Tang
Mimi Tang, a survivor of multiple strokes, shared how the program helped her regain lost abilities, overcome partial paralysis, and reclaim her independence after years of isolation:
“The support has been life-changing. Without URSA, I wouldn’t have the tools or the friendships that sustain me today.”
Legal Rights for Brain Injury Victims in the U.S.
At the Brain Injury Help Center, we celebrate this progress in Alberta and remind you that in the United States, victims of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) also have fundamental legal rights.
If your injury was caused by a car accident, fall, medical negligence, or assault, you may be entitled to:
- Compensation for medical expenses and rehabilitation treatments
- Damages for lost income and diminished earning capacity
- Legal support for TBI or severe neurological damage claims
- Compensation for pain, suffering, and reduced quality of life
The law protects your rights—even when symptoms are invisible. Justice is also a form of healing.
