Head Injury in Infant: Woman Arrested for Child Neglect and Abuse

A 26-year-old woman has been arrested by the Ponca City Police Department (PCPD) after a 2-month-old baby was rushed to the hospital with a head injury.

Alliance Medical staff alerted detectives on July 14 when the newborn arrived by ambulance, showing signs of a suspicious head injury. The child was quickly transferred to OU Children’s Hospital and underwent immediate surgery.

Detectives interviewed Holly Marie Sheppard, the 2-month-old’s sole caregiver at the time of the incident. Initially denying knowledge of the injuries, Sheppard later admitted to dropping the baby twice.

However, medical professionals determined that the head injury in infant was not consistent with a fall. Consequently, PCPD charged Sheppard with child neglect, child abuse, and obstruction of justice. She is currently held at Kay County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

The baby’s condition remains very critical at OU Children’s Hospital.

In light of this heart-wrenching incident, parents and guardians are urged to seek justice and compensation for neglect leading to brain injuries.
