Luis Arraez Faces Concussion After Baseball Game Injury

Houston, TX – San Diego Padres designated hitter Luis Arraez suffered a concussion during a baseball game on Sunday, April 20, 2025, after an accidental collision while running to first base during a matchup against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. The impact led the team to place him on the seven-day concussion injured list, in accordance with Major League Baseball (MLB) protocols.

How Did the Accident Happen?

While attempting to advance a teammate with a bunt, Arraez was struck in the head by the shoulder of Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubon. Immediately after the impact, Arraez showed signs of disorientation and loss of spatial awareness—classic symptoms of a silent traumatic brain injury.

Although his initial recovery shows positive signs—he was able to sleep, wake normally, and return to the clubhouse—his official return will depend on passing a series of rigorous neurological tests under the medical supervision of MLB and the Players Association.

The earliest possible return date for Arraez is scheduled for April 29 against the Giants, provided his recovery continues favorably.

Concussion: The Silent Impact

Concussions, though often invisible at first glance, can have long-lasting effects if not properly treated. Potential consequences include:

  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Mood or behavior changes
  • Persistent headaches
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Increased vulnerability to future brain injuries

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), even mild concussions can trigger significant long-term health problems if strict recovery protocols are not followed.

Brain Injuries Affect Everyone: How Do They Impact Everyday Life?

Traumatic brain injuries don’t just affect professional athletes. We are all vulnerable in everyday situations such as:

  • Car accidents
  • Falls at home or in public
  • Blows during recreational or sports activities
  • Workplace accidents

A concussion or hard hit to the head can severely disrupt daily life, including:

  • Work: difficulties concentrating or completing tasks
  • Personal relationships: mood swings or irritability
  • Mental health: increased risk of anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders
  • Independence: needing support for basic activities like driving, studying, or working

It is critical to seek immediate medical attention after any head trauma, even if symptoms seem mild or delayed.
