Loma Linda, California — A California man is expressing gratitude for his survival after two boulders fell from a cliff and crushed his van on Highway 18, resulting in severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.
Joseph Furtek, who is recovering at Loma Linda University Medical Center, shared his story of survival. On October 18, while moving to the Central Coast, Furtek’s van was crushed by the boulders, leaving him unconscious. “I’m very, very blessed to be alive,” Furtek said. “I don’t remember any of this, but I guess two large boulders fell on my vehicle.”
Despite ongoing rock excavation in the area, Furtek had no reason to worry until the accident happened. He mentioned that he doesn’t recall anything from the two days leading up to the crash and expressed relief that he doesn’t remember the incident.
Good Samaritans stopped at the scene and helped by calling for rescue teams. Furtek was later rushed to the hospital, where doctors saved his leg, which had suffered severe fractures. Furtek lost nearly 75% of his blood but is thankful for the medical care he received.
As Furtek focuses on his physical recovery, he struggles financially after losing his van, his primary source of livelihood. He finds it frustrating but is grateful to be alive.
