Support Campaign for a Critically Injured Police Officer

Covina, California — Covina Police Officer Jesse Gutierrez, a former U.S. Marine and dedicated police officer, suffered critical injuries during a high-speed pursuit on May 6. Gutierrez’s patrol car collided with a cement sign while he was protecting his community.

I heard a loud bang and saw the Covina PD car crash,” recounted Eduardo Rangel, whose cafe is near the accident scene. Firefighters had to use the jaws of life to free Officer Gutierrez and his K9 partner, Paco, from the wreckage.

Officer Gutierrez has been sedated due to a severe head injury and has remained in sedation for over a week. “He’s been with our department for four years,” stated Chief David Povero. Gutierrez, a husband and father of two young boys, is the sole provider for his family.

To support Gutierrez’s family during this challenging time, the Police Association of Covina has joined forces with the Peace Officers Research Association of California to launch a fund-a-hero campaign. “While the city covers his medical care, there are financial gaps we’re trying to bridge,” explained Chief Povero.

The community is encouraged to contribute to the fund-a-hero campaign through the Peace Officers Research Association of California’s website. “Unfortunately, this happened, but we hope to help him out,” said Rangel.

Fortunately, Officer Gutierrez’s K-9 partner, Paco, was unharmed and has received a clean bill of health from a veterinarian, according to Lt. Josh Turner.
