5-Year-Old Boy Declared Brain Dead After DUI Hit-and-Run

Garden Grove, California — A heartbroken mother is preparing to say her final goodbyes to her 5-year-old son, Jacob Ramirez, who has been declared brain dead after a tragic hit-and-run incident involving a suspected DUI driver.

Jacob was struck along with his two siblings and parents while they were out for a bike ride in Garden Grove.

The accident, which occurred on Sunday, also left Jacob’s father and sister critically injured. Jacob’s mother, Angela Hernandez Mejia has shared that she has only 24 hours to spend with her son before saying farewell.

Angela and the family’s 8-month-old daughter were also injured but have since been released from the hospital.

However, her husband and 6-year-old daughter, Gianna, remain hospitalized in critical condition. Angela plans to stay by her son’s side until the end, filled with profound sorrow and wondering what she could have done differently.

The suspect, 29-year-old Ceferino Ramos of Santa Ana, was arrested with a blood alcohol content of 2.2—nearly triple the legal limit. He faces charges of driving under the influence causing bodily injury and hit-and-run with permanent injury or death.

Ramos was apprehended after a good Samaritan followed him and alerted law enforcement to his location.

Amidst the family’s grief, Angela has expressed gratitude for the community’s support, even as she faces the daunting task of arranging her son’s burial.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Angela and her family during this challenging time.
