Boy Removed from Life Support After Severe Brain Injury

Garden Grove, California — A tragic DUI incident in Garden Grove has resulted in a 5-year-old boy being taken off life support just over a week after the crash, according to prosecutors.

Jacob Ramirez and his family were struck by a 2003 Toyota Camry on the evening of July 7 while riding in bike trailers along Haster Street at Twin Tree Lane. The crash left Jacob, his 7-year-old sister, and their parents critically injured. Jacob was declared brain-dead late last week due to severe brain injury.

The suspect, Ceferino Ascencion Ramos of Santa Ana, was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including driving under the influence, causing injury, hit-and-run with serious injury, and failing to stop at the scene.

Ramos, who had a blood-alcohol level of .22, is also facing sentencing enhancements for leaving victims comatose and inflicting significant bodily injury. Further charges are anticipated, prosecutors said.
