Tennessee — A recently engaged couple from Tennessee was severely injured in a car accident while traveling to a family celebration in Alabama. Malia Duarte and her fiancé, Austin, were on their way to her father’s 50th birthday in late October when a tire detached from a passing trailer, hitting their car head-on.
The accident left Austin with a traumatic brain injury, requiring emergency transport to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Fortunately, he, Malia, and their dog Oreo survived the incident.
After two weeks of recovery, Austin has returned to Nashville, where he is undergoing facial surgery and physical therapy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The couple plans to return to Knoxville as Austin continues his journey to recovery.
Expressing her relief, Malia shared that she was afraid of losing him that night. She hopes the accident serves as a reminder to drivers to inspect their vehicles and prioritize road safety. Although it may be an expense no one wants to take on, she believes it makes a significant difference.
The traumatic experience highlights the importance of vehicle safety for all travelers. The community wishes Austin a full and swift recovery as he continues to heal. Those wishing to support the couple can donate through their GoFundMe page.
