Woman Sentenced for Toddler’s Severe Brain Damage

Garden Grove, California — Noelia Ayala, a 24-year-old resident of Garden Grove, has been sentenced to 12 years to life in prison for severely beating her 2-year-old stepson, resulting in the child’s permanent paralysis and severe brain damage

The sentencing follows Ayala’s conviction in July 2024 for charges including attempted torture and assault, leading to the child’s comatose state.

On August 23, 2019, emergency responders were called to Ayala’s home, where they found the toddler vomiting blood and semi-conscious. He was swiftly transported to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC).

Medical examinations revealed extensive bruising, bite marks, and severe brain bleeding, necessitating emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

Ayala’s assault stemmed from her frustration over her partner’s absences and disputes involving the boy’s mother. Despite initially attributing the injuries to a pool accident, medical professionals identified the signs of repeated abuse.

The child’s father, Alberto Aragon, faces charges of felony child abuse and endangerment due to the delayed medical attention.

The toddler, now 7, endures lifelong effects from the brutal attack. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer condemned the act, highlighting the severe impact on the young victim and the tireless efforts of medical professionals in his recovery.
